Berlin follows Paris and London as
the major destinations in European city tourism. In 2010 more than 20
million bednights were registered in the city’s hotels and accommodation
facilities. Consequently, the German capital can serve as a laboratory
to study configuration and change in urban tourism.
The map shows the mobility of 300 visitors in Berlin. The changing colors
represent the proportion of individuals who were tracked within the
squares of a 25-meter grid during the field study. The red color highlights
the places that are most frequently visited, such as the Reichstag,
Brandenburger Tor and PotsdamerPlatz. Moreover, the major street axes
Unter den Linden, Friedrichstraße and Kurfürstendamm can
be identified as well as specific routes of the local railway system.
Combined with the questionnaire data, the mobility paths can be analyzed
according to socioeconomic, demographic and other characteristics.
Using GPS loggers and questionnaires, the data was collected in Berlin
in September 2010 as part of a research project conducted by the authors
of this article. The data analysis was carried out with ArcGIS software
in cooperation with Michael Bauder at the Department of Cultural Geography,
Freiburg University, Germany.
